    Question

I want to transfer some VHS tapes to my computer. I'd like to just hook up my VCR to my digital camera. How can I connect my mini-DV camera to my VCR? Is there a fire wire cable designed specifically for this task? Thanks!

    Answer

    The "Tech Talk staff" replied:

Most digital video cameras have an analogue input. The cables generally come with your camera. They have three RCA plugs. They are yellow, red, and white on one end (which would come out of your VCR) and a triple "mini plug" on the other end. This goes into the "AV I/O" port on the camera. If you want to eventually transfer VHS videos into your computer for editing you would need to record them to mini-DV and then use firewire to get them into your computer. I have been told that some cameras will act as a "pass through", but I have not found that to be the case myself.

We actually covered that topic. Check out our "Digital Video" program at http://techtalk.umn.edu/episodes/season2/209.shtml. In the upper right hand corner of the page you'll find links to Real or Quicktime streaming video files. You will need a broadband connection to view these files. There is also a PDF transcript of the program available to read if you would like.

Good luck and thanks for watching our program.
