    Question

[I] enjoyed the ["Computer Viruses" episode]. I had to go to the basement, due to the bad weather and missed the last part. I do hope it will re-air.

[I am] interested in the software Brian used to monitor what was going on [with] his system as the virus ran. Can I get the name and where to purchase this software, or others similar? Looked like a useful tool for me.

    Thanks for your e-mail.

If you wish to watch the program again you can watch it online. We have links to a Quicktime and a Realplayer version of the program in the upper right hand corner of the episode page.

The software that Brian Eckman used to check for modified files and registry entries is InCtrl5. It is "free" with a paid subscription to PC Magazine's Utility Library.

The software that was monitoring network traffic was Ethereal and the tool that I used to detect newly opened ports is Fport. Both of those products are free.

    Thanks for watching the show.
