    Question

I need basic info about converting my digital camcorder [footage] to DVD. What additional hardware and/or software do I need? I have [a] Canon ZR40 digital camcorder [and a] computer with XP home, [including] an 8X DVD writer, USB 2.0 1394.

Thanks for your e-mail. I don't know if you were able to watch our "Digital Video" episode of "Tech Talk" which aired on May 30th in the Twin Cities, but that program touched on this very topic. On that episode page we have links to Real and Quicktime versions of that program. You will need a broadband connection to watch these streaming files. If you are using a dial-up connection and cannot see the streaming files, we have a PDF document on the page that is a transcript of the program.

Basically, in order to take the video you shoot on your mini DV camera and burn it to DVD, you hook your camera via Firewire to your computer and "digitize" the footage. In order to do this you need a Firewire port and software on your computer to digitize the footage. The DVD writer in your computer more than likely came with the software you need to use to digitize, edit, and burn to a DVD. One of the more common software packages that comes with DVD writers is Sonic MyDVD. The actual process of digitizing, editing, and burning a DVD from camcorder footage varies greatly from software to software. I suggest you check to see which software came with your DVD writer and consult the software documentation for instructions.

    Thanks for watching "Tech Talk."
